Palawan State University (PalawanSU) hosted the West Philippine Sea (WPS) Awareness Forum on October 17, 2026, at the PalawanSU Amphitheater, Main Campus. The event aimed to deepen public awareness on verifying information, distinguishing facts from misleading claims, and understanding the Philippines’ lawful maritime rights in the West Philippine Sea. Held under the theme “Defending Our Rights, Preserving Our Heritage, and Securing Our Future Through Music for Peace, Heritage, and the Sea,” the forum highlighted how the West Philippine Sea is an integral part of everyday life in Palawan. As a vital lifeline that supports fishing livelihoods, food supplies, marine life, and coastal community traditions, developments in these waters directly impact local families, the environment, and the cultural heritage passed down to future generations.
Against the backdrop of continuing tensions between the Philippines and China, official reports of interference with Philippine maritime operations, and growing concerns over unauthorized fishing and marine protection, the forum underscored the critical need for reliable public information and informed citizenship. The event gathered students from various universities across Puerto Princesa alongside local community sectors, encouraging participants to ask thoughtful questions, check sources, and discuss pressing maritime issues with respect.
The program opened with remarks from PalawanSU President Dr. Venzon L. Limpiada, followed by an introduction of the keynote speaker from University Federation Council Chair-Elect Clarence R. Ruiz. Keynote speaker and retired Supreme Court Senior Associate Justice Hon. Antonio T. Carpio detailed the legal and historical foundations of the country’s claims under international law and the 2016 Arbitral Award, emphasizing, “This is a battle for the hearts and minds… We will teach our school children to stand fast, to fight for this arbitral award because this is their heritage. And the world is supporting us, and that is what is important.”
Following an interactive open forum on national sovereignty and civic duty, the PalawanSU Singers delivered a cultural performance featuring original compositions with Ms. Chariza Lardizabal, the mind behind the songs, arranged and directed by Prof. Demy Dizon. Drawing from the daily realities of coastal communities around the WPS, the presentation underscored the connection between peace, heritage, and marine protection.
The forum concluded with a call for participants to counter misinformation, support peaceful solutions, and safeguard Palawan’s maritime legacy.
