A young Palaweño has brought honor to the province after securing a bronze medal in the prestigious 2024 Asia International Math Olympiad (AIMO) Open Final Global Round held in Incheon, South Korea last July 28, 2024.
Michael Eli G. Socrates, a Grade 6 pupil from Palawan State University (PalawanSU) Elementary Laboratory School, showcased exceptional mathematical prowess as he competed against brilliant young minds from over 20 countries, with more or less 1,600 participants from elementary and high school. The competition, organized by the Asia International Mathematical Olympiad Union (AIMO Union), a collaborative body of mathematical research organizations and individuals that provides a platform for students to explore their mathematical potential, engage in cultural exchange, and foster international friendships, has been instrumental in identifying and supporting young math prodigies who will be future leaders in science and technology.
Socrates’ achievement is a testament to his hard work, dedication, and innate talent for mathematics. His bronze medal win is not only a personal triumph but also a source of inspiration for aspiring young mathematicians in Palawan and the entire country.
The awarding ceremony took place at the Songdo International Convention and Exhibition Center, where Socrates and other awardees were recognized for their outstanding performance. Two other Palawan students who brought home prestigious awards from the said math competition were Samuel Alarcon, a Grade 6 pupil from Pilot Elementary School, who claimed the top prize with a gold medal, while Lance Lecter Lao, a Grade 11 student from Palawan Hope Christian School, earned a bronze medal.
