Relative to the National Resilience Month, the officials and staff of Palawan State University (PalawanSU) recently participated in a fire and earthquake drill to ensure preparedness in the event of an emergency. The drill aimed to test the response and evacuation procedures of the University community. Senior Fire Officer 1 (SFO1) Leonard Bryan Z. Gacayan, Shift A Commander, Chief Public Information Unit, Chief Plans and Training, Special Rescue Force, Puerto Princesa City Fire Office, led the session on fire preventions, suppression and investigation, and the ‘do’s’ and ‘dont’s’ during earthquake.
The fire drill scenario simulated a fire outbreak in one of the University grounds. After the participants were alerted, they were instructed and taught on the proper use of fire extinguishers and evacuating the area safely.
Following the fire drill, an earthquake drill was also conducted. Participants practiced the recommended procedures for taking cover under sturdy furniture or doorways and holding on for dear life. Once the shaking subsided, they proceeded to evacuate the building following designated routes.
The fire and earthquake drill served as a valuable training exercise for the PalawanSU community. It provided an opportunity to identify areas for improvement in the University’s emergency response plans.
This proactive approach to safety demonstrates PalawanSU’s commitment to the well-being of its staff and officials. By conducting regular drills and ensuring everyone is familiar with evacuation procedures, the University can minimize risks and ensure a swift and coordinated response in the event of a real emergency.
