In a significant step towards advancing sustainable solid waste management (SWM) in Puerto Princesa, representatives from Eco Kolek, a USAID grantee, community-based waste collector organization and a proud startup graduate of the Palawan International Business Incubator (PITBI), recently paid a courtesy call to the President of Palawan State University (PSU), Dr. Ramon M. Docto.
The meeting aimed to explore potential collaboration areas, share innovative SWM strategies, and engage the university community in fostering environmental stewardship. Eco Kolek, known for its impact-driven materials recovery management platform and services, introduced their initiatives and introduced Ms. Renee Esses, a US Fellow from the City of Coppell, Texas. Ms. Esses brings a wealth of knowledge and experience from the United States, where she has been instrumental in implementing innovative strategies and behaviors towards waste segregation and sustainable SWM.
During the meeting, Eco Kolek outlined their mission to transform waste management practices in Puerto Princesa. They emphasized the importance of changing mindsets and behaviors towards waste segregation and the role of education in achieving this goal. The organization envisions a partnership with Palawan State University that leverages the enthusiasm and creativity of students and the broader startup community to drive innovation in SWM practices.
Dr. Docto expressed his support for the initiative, highlighting PSU’s commitment to environmental sustainability and community engagement. He noted that collaboration with Eco Kolek aligns with the university’s vision of being a leader in promoting sustainable practices and preparing students to become proactive environmental stewards. Ms. Shellemai Roa, co-founder and project director of Eco Kolek, shared insights into the organization’s journey and their impact on the local community. She emphasized the need for a collective effort in addressing the challenges of waste management and the potential for students to play a pivotal role in this endeavor. “Our partnership with Palawan State University will not only enhance our efforts but also provide students with practical experiences in sustainable waste management,” she said. During the courtesy call, Ms. Roa introduced their US Fellow, Ms. Renee Esses from the City of Coppell, Texas, USA. Ms. Renee Esses discussed the importance of community involvement, educational campaigns, and the use of technology in enhancing waste segregation practices. Her insights inspired discussions on how these strategies could be integrated into PSU’s existing programs and initiatives.
After the meeting, the representatives from Eco Kolek and Ms. Esses were given a quick tour of the American Corner. This tour highlighted the resources and opportunities available, promoting partnership, education, and innovation championed by YSEALI and the American Councils for International Education. The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to advancing sustainable SWM through collaborative efforts. Plans were made to organize workshops, seminars, and hands-on projects involving students and startup networks, focusing on Eco Kolek’s sustainable SWM practices and innovative approaches.
This partnership marks a promising beginning for Eco Kolek and Palawan State University in their joint mission to promote environmental sustainability. By engaging the next generation of leaders and innovators, they aim to create a lasting impact on waste management practices in Puerto Princesa and beyond.
