Project Zacchaeus Corporation (PZC) has been recognized as the 2024 Best Nominee (Philippines) of the Asian Association of Business Incubation (AABI), a significant milestone that underscores its dedication to community service and innovation. This award is a testament to the remarkable achievements and unwavering commitment of the organization in driving positive change across various sectors.
This prestigious recognition, awarded by the Asian Association of Business Incubation (AABI), seeks to celebrate exceptional entrepreneurs who have demonstrated remarkable success and innovation in their respective fields. Since its establishment in 2002, AABI has been a driving force in fostering entrepreneurial collaboration throughout the Asia-Pacific region. Sponsored by the Shanghai Technology Innovation Center and Torch High Technology Industry Development Center, Ministry of Science and Technology of China, the AABI Torch Entrepreneur Awards aim to accelerate business growth and recognize outstanding entrepreneurs through three distinct categories, each highlighting different facets of innovation.
John Vincent Gastanes, CEO and Founder of Project Zacchaeus, emphasized that true success involves remaining dedicated to one’s purpose, viewing each advancement as a blessing, and perceiving challenges as opportunities for growth. He believes that serving others magnifies the impact of one’s efforts.
“True success is not just about achieving goals, but about staying faithful to the purpose you’ve been given. Every step forward is a blessing, and every challenge is an opportunity to grow. I believe that when we dedicate our work to serving others, we create something far greater than ourselves,” he said.
The journey of PZC is marked by a series of notable accomplishments over the past three years. On March 3, 2021, the GoPalengke Team was honored with the Mayor’s Award as the Retail and Food Service Hero of the Year by Mayor Lucilo Bayron of Puerto Princesa City. This award celebrated their courageous and impactful efforts in food distribution during the COVID-19 pandemic. The recognition highlighted their significant contribution to the community during a critical time, showcasing their exemplary service and dedication.
PZC has also founded several impactful start-ups and community-based enterprises. Eco Kolek, for instance, is a waste management enterprise that empowers informal waste pickers through fair trading and upcycling. Farm Konekt supports farmers by providing technical assistance and marketing for grassroots produce, while PZC Servant Leadership Labs focuses on leadership and skills development for partner cooperatives. Additionally, Seaside Tailors offers tailoring services and entrepreneurial opportunities for women in Barangay San Pedro, Puerto Princesa City.
The organization’s commitment extends to various programs aimed at supporting communities. The Heart Food Project provides essential meals during lockdowns, Cassava Cups offer seasonal treats made from local produce, and the Great Banquet celebrates the achievements of community leaders through festive gatherings.
Gastanes acknowledged that the recognition would not have been possible without the hard work and dedication of his team and the communities involved. He also expressed deep gratitude to the Palawan International Technology Business Incubator (PITBI) for their unwavering support since their early days of startup in 2021 and to AABI for the honor.
“This achievement wouldn’t be possible without the dedication and hard work of our incredible team and communities I dearly love. I am deeply grateful to PITBI for their unwavering support and to the AABI for this incredible recognition,” he said.
The Palawan International Technology Business Incubator (PITBI) has played a pivotal role in supporting PZC’s growth. PITBI assisted Farm Konekt in developing a comprehensive business plan, connecting them with mentors, and facilitating access to a network of investors and partners. The incubator also provided office spaces and helped Farm Konekt participate in trade shows and explore international markets. This partnership highlights the vital role of incubators in nurturing and scaling innovative ventures.
The MIMAROPA Ventures Innovation Network (MVINet) consortium, through the leadership of Dr. Ma. Josefina P. Abilay, was instrumental in forging the connection with AABI, enabling PZC to engage with a broader network of business incubators across Asia.
When asked about his message to young and aspiring individuals, he said that he wants to encourage them to understand that their journey has a purpose. With perseverance, integrity, and the support of a strong team, they can make a meaningful and lasting impact. “For the young and aspiring, remember that your journey has a purpose, and with perseverance, integrity, and a strong team by your side, you can make a lasting impact,” Gastanes said.
The recognition as the 2024 Best Nominee is not only a testament to Project Zacchaeus Corporation’s past achievements but also a beacon of hope and inspiration for others. As they prepare to join the 2024 AABI Summit & Awards Ceremony in Hyderabad, India, their story continues to inspire and encourage future leaders and entrepreneurs.
